Controlling moving heads + Laser. QuickShow or Soundswtch or other?

It's 2025 now. I'm finally adding additional lights to my laser setup and getting into DMX for control of everything. Question is if it's easier to use QuickShow to control the moving heads, fogger, etc (plus laser) using QuickDMX, or if it's easier to use Soundswtch to control the laser (plus everything else) using the QuickShow fixture template in Soundswtch??

Or is there another solution that works even better that I'm unaware of?

Thanks!!

Hello Brian,

QuickShow controls lasers over the ILDA signal or directly over ethernet. DMX lasers are kind of primitive compared to computer-controlled lasers. Might I suggest the free ebook my colleague wrote? https://lasershowprojector.com/#ebook . This will tell you everything and will get you going with computer-controlled lasers.

Thanks for the reply, Bob! I’ve been using the laser over Ethernet for a few years now, using quickshow cues and timeline to build out shows. I’m trying to figure out the best/easiest way to control the laser and moving heads in tandem.

I have an apc mini mk2 and an entecc box and want to control all fixtures from the apc. Bottom line is that soundswitch seems better/easier for controlling the moving heads and quickshow seems better/easier for controlling the laser. Both bits of software seem to be able to control the other parts to some degree, but which will be less rudimentary?

I’m asking for people with experience controlling both in tandem to weigh in on the best approach.

This thread has a lot of good info about the interplay of soundswitch and quickshow, but it's 4 years old now. Was just wondering if the landscape had changed in the meantime and there are easier ways to do this.
