FB3 question

Hi, I've just bought a used, older FB3 unit with USB and DMX daughter boards. When I connect it to a PC running XP, the green (power) light comes on, the 3rd LED (yellow) lights up briefly and then goes out, and the computer does not detect a new device. There is no memory card in the FB3. Can anyone tell me if this is normal behaviour (do I just need to buy an xD card) or is it a more serious issue?
