Midi LEARN function doesn't show buttons

I'm trying to assign some effects to APC40 controls. When I use the LEARN button to chose the control, the sliders and knobs show up, but if I press a button it's ignored. How do I know what midi numbers are associated with the buttons?
 
Can you post a screen shot of what you are seeing when you are trying to "Learn" a button? I am not sure I can envision what you are experiencing.
 
Possibly, some other place in BEYOND has a reaction on this MIDI slider. Go to Configuration dialog, Laser Preview tab, "Show MIDI Messages" checkbox. Set it ON. After that the main review panel will show all incoming messages info about "who" use it. Reaction allowed in one place only.

For effects I would recommend to use Channels.
